Mechanical joining systems — grooved couplings, press fittings and push-fit connectors — save installation labour, and that is why US contractors keep switching to them. For Asian manufacturers they are attractive products, but the market is controlled by listings and approvals, not by price alone.
Approvals by application
| Application | What buyers require |
|---|---|
| Fire sprinkler and standpipe | UL listing and/or FM approval for the specific coupling, fitting and gasket, installed to NFPA 13 |
| Potable water | NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and lead-free certification (NSF/ANSI 372) |
| HVAC and industrial | Pressure ratings and gasket compatibility per the manufacturer's data. CRN in Canada |
| Gas (press systems) | Specific gas-rated listings. Never substitute water-only fittings |
Listings belong to a specific manufacturer and plant. Moving production to a new factory in Vietnam or elsewhere usually needs the listing extended to that site before shipments start.
Gaskets and O-rings: the logistics detail
- EPDM gaskets are for water service. Nitrile is used for oils and fuels. Pack and label each type separately.
- Elastomers age with heat, ozone and UV. Avoid long storage in hot containers or yards, and print the cure date on cartons.
- Pre-lubricated gaskets and press O-rings need clean, sealed packaging.
Buy America and public projects
Federally funded infrastructure projects in the US — water, transport and many public buildings — apply Buy America rules. Under the Build America, Buy America Act, iron and steel products generally must be produced in the United States. Imported fittings, however good, are usually excluded from these projects. Focus Asian-made grooved and press products on private commercial, industrial and residential work — see origin and Buy America.
Duties
Grooved couplings and fittings of ductile iron or steel usually fall under heading 7307. Copper press fittings fall under 7412. Both can be affected by Section 232. Ductile and malleable iron fittings from China are a known AD risk — see HTS and tariffs and AD on fittings.
DDP for contractor supply
Contractors order by project and floor. A DDP set-up that delivers mixed pallets to a US distribution warehouse, with releases timed to the project schedule, competes well against domestic stock. Grooved products are heavy, so plan loads by weight — see packing fittings.
