US and Canadian plumbing, HVAC and industrial distributors stock thousands of fitting SKUs: 150# threaded stainless elbows, 3000# forged socket-weld tees, butt-weld reducers, grooved couplings, copper DWV fittings, press fittings and camlocks. Much of that range is made in Asia. Selling it DDP — delivered, duty paid — is how Asian manufacturers compete with domestic stock. It also means the seller carries the most complex duty exposure of almost any product group.
The main product families
| Family | Typical standards | Trade risk |
|---|---|---|
| Cast stainless threaded / socket-weld, Class 150 | MSS SP-114, ASTM A351 | Medium |
| Forged steel 2000#–9000# threaded / socket-weld | ASME B16.11, ASTM A105 / A182 | High — AD orders on several origins |
| Butt-weld (elbows, tees, reducers, caps) | ASME B16.9, ASTM A234 / A403 | Very high — long-running AD orders |
| Malleable iron threaded | ASME B16.3 | High for Chinese origin |
| Grooved couplings and fittings | UL / FM listings, NSF/ANSI 61 | Medium |
| Copper and brass, DWV, press | ASME B16.22 / B16.18 / B16.29, NSF/ANSI 372 | Copper Section 232; Canadian AD measures |

Four questions to answer before quoting DDP
- What is the HTS code? Fittings of iron or steel fall under heading 7307, copper fittings under 7412 and aluminium fittings under 7609 — see HTS codes and tariffs.
- Is there an AD/CVD order on this product from this country? Butt-weld, forged and malleable fittings from several Asian countries are covered — see anti-dumping duties on fittings.
- Where was the fitting actually forged or cast? Finishing in a second country does not always change origin — see country of origin and Buy America.
- Which certifications does the end market require? Lead-free for potable water, UL/FM for fire protection, and a CRN in Canada — see exporting fittings to Canada.
How a DDP fittings shipment moves
- Pickup from the factory, or consolidation of several suppliers' cartons in Vietnam.
- Export clearance and ocean freight, usually FCL for distributors and LCL for top-up orders — see FCL vs LCL.
- US entry (or Canadian entry through CARM) with duties paid, Section 232 and AD/CVD deposits where they apply.
- Delivery on pallets to the distributor's warehouse, with an appointment.
Where DDP sellers lose money
- Quoting on base duty only, then discovering an AD deposit rate on arrival.
- Mixed containers with fittings from several origins and only one country of origin on the invoice.
- Missing permanent origin marking on each steel fitting — see marking rules.
- Weight: fittings are dense, so a 20' container is often full by weight long before it is full by volume — see packing fittings.
Trade-remedy orders, Section 232 annexes and Canadian surtaxes on steel and copper products change often, and scope depends on the exact product. This article is general guidance, not legal advice — confirm the treatment of your HTS code and origin before quoting.
