When a container arrives at a Vietnamese port for a buyer in Cambodia, there are two ways to deliver it. The cheaper option depends on the container's free time, return location and cargo type.
Option A — Through-delivery of the container
The container stays sealed on a chassis and is trucked across the border to the consignee's warehouse, unloaded, and the empty is returned.
- Pros: one handling, lower damage risk, seal intact (important for transit cargo).
- Cons: the shipping line must allow the container to leave Vietnam; empty return costs; detention charges if the round trip takes too long.
Option B — Devanning and transloading
The container is unloaded at a warehouse in Vietnam (or at the border), cargo is loaded onto trucks to Cambodia, and the empty container is returned locally.
- Pros: container returned quickly in Vietnam, avoiding detention; flexible truck sizes.
- Cons: extra handling and labour; higher damage risk; extra paperwork if seals are broken.
Cost comparison checklist
| Cost item | Through-delivery | Transloading |
|---|---|---|
| Trucking | Container chassis round trip | Short haul to warehouse + trucks to Cambodia |
| Handling | Unload once at destination | Unload + reload + unload |
| Container detention | Higher risk | Low |
| Line permission / deposit | Often required | Not required |
| Damage risk | Low | Higher |
Rule of thumb
Transit cargo and high-value goods: through-delivery. Robust cargo, tight container free time or deliveries to several Cambodian addresses: transloading can be cheaper.
