Engineered hardwood — a real wood wear layer bonded to a stable core — is one of the fastest-moving categories on US flooring shelves, from big-box stores to specialist wide-plank brands. Vietnam has become a serious source: experienced mills around Binh Duong and Dong Nai, good access to white oak and other species, and direct ocean services to every US coast. Selling or buying DDP — delivered with duties paid — turns a factory price into a landed price per square foot that a US buyer can compare directly with domestic stock.
Five things to agree before the first container
- Specification — construction, thickness, wear layer, species, grade, width, length, profile and finish. See specifying engineered flooring for the US market.
- Compliance — formaldehyde certification under TSCA Title VI (aligned with CARB Phase 2), the Lacey Act declaration, and any FSC or chain-of-custody claims. See flooring compliance documents.
- Classification and duty — the HTS code, origin of the product and any anti-dumping exposure. See HTS codes and duties for wood flooring.
- Packing and moisture — carton spec, pallet rules and the moisture content at loading. See container loading and moisture control.
- Delivery terms — DDP to the distributor's warehouse, or DDU/DAP where the buyer has its own customs broker. See DDP vs DDU.
How a DDP flooring shipment moves
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Pre-shipment | Pre-loading inspection against the approved sample; moisture readings; carton labels checked |
| Vietnam | Container loading at the mill, export clearance, ocean freight from Cai Mep or Cat Lai |
| Before arrival | ISF filed; Lacey Act declaration and TSCA certification statement prepared |
| US entry | Customs entry, duties and fees paid under DDP, any holds handled |
| Delivery | Drayage or transload to the distributor's warehouse by appointment |
Supplier checks that prevent claims
- Ask how lamella and core are dried and moisture-checked, how layers are pressed, and where the finish line is.
- Approve a physical sample in the final construction and finish, and keep a labelled counter-sample.
- Inspect before loading — width, thickness, finish, colour and moisture against the approved sample.
Canada too
Canadian distributors buy the same products. A DDP set-up through a non-resident importer, with clearance through CARM, works for Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal — see DDP to Canada.
