US policy pushes buyers to reduce dependence on Chinese aluminium. The Aluminum Association's trade agenda focuses on subsidised Chinese metal and on enforcement against unfairly traded imports. Southeast Asia is the obvious alternative, but "made in Southeast Asia" only helps if the origin holds up to US scrutiny.

This is a simplified overview. Each supplier's own supply chain matters more than the country average.
What decides origin for US customs
- Substantial transformation: the product takes its origin from the country where it last became a new article with a new name, character or use. Simple cutting, painting or packing usually does not change origin — see origin and marking.
- Separate smelt and cast reporting: even when the product's origin is Vietnam, the US asks where the primary metal was smelted and cast — see AIM licences.
- Country-specific duties: Section 301 and other measures differ by country of origin, not by port of loading — see US tariffs in 2026.
DDP routing through Vietnam
- Pickup from factories in southern Vietnam, or cross-border trucking from Cambodian SEZs through Moc Bai – Bavet — see Cambodia → Vietnam trucking.
- Export clearance and loading at Cat Lai or Cai Mep on direct US services.
- US entry, AIM licence, Section 232 and other duties paid under the DDP arrangement.
- Delivery to the buyer's warehouse, job site or Amazon FC — see DDP to Los Angeles and other routes.

Due-diligence checklist for buyers
- Visit or audit the extrusion, casting or fabrication lines, not just the sales office.
- Request billet and ingot purchase records with smelt and cast country.
- Check any AD/CVD scope or circumvention rulings that mention the product and country.
- Agree in the contract who bears the risk if duties change after shipment — see DDP contract terms.
