Vietnam is one of the largest furniture suppliers to the United States. More and more US buyers — from small retailers to online brands — now ask factories for DDP prices: one figure that covers production, freight, US customs, duties and delivery. This guide explains how DDP furniture shipping works and what to prepare.
Why buyers want DDP for furniture
- They do not need their own customs broker or bond.
- Landed cost is fixed before ordering — essential for retail pricing.
- One partner is responsible if anything goes wrong in transit.
The DDP furniture process, step by step
- Product review: HTS code, wood species, composite wood content, upholstery.
- Duty calculation: base duty plus any additional US tariffs that apply to the product — see furniture import duties 2026.
- Booking: usually 40' high cube containers for bulky furniture.
- Export clearance in Vietnam and ISF filing before loading.
- US clearance: customs entry, Lacey Act declaration, duty payment.
- Delivery: to a warehouse, store, Amazon FBA / Wayfair-type DCs, or white-glove home delivery.
Compliance checklist for furniture
| Requirement | Applies to |
|---|---|
| Lacey Act declaration (genus, species, country of harvest) | Products containing solid wood or plant material |
| TSCA Title VI certification and labels | Products containing MDF, particleboard or hardwood plywood |
| Country of origin marking ("Made in Vietnam") | All furniture |
| ISPM 15 stamp | Wooden pallets and crates |
| Tip-over and children's furniture rules (CPSC) | Clothing storage units, children's furniture |
Common DDP mistakes
- Quoting DDP before confirming the HTS code — furniture codes carry very different tariff treatment.
- Forgetting delivery requirements: liftgate, appointment, residential surcharges.
- Under-packing: furniture damage claims are the most frequent problem on this lane. See furniture packing tips.
